Roots on the Row is the 2019 public art project created for Salem Arts Festival. Made by local artist Maia Mattson, Roots on the Row is a collection of botanical weavings utilizing plants foraged and found in the Salem and the surrounding North Shore area. Mattson is an installation artist passionate about using natural materials in her work. Fascinated by the interchange between preservation and decay, she allows weather and time to effect her work offering an alternative lens to her botanical pieces. These weavings are fully biodegradable and will shift in color and texture as their season on the Row progresses.
