The Mural Slam stands as a signature highlight of the 17th annual Salem Arts Festival, taking place June 6-8, 2025. This dynamic live painting event transforms Artists' Row on New Derby Street into an open-air studio where selected artists create large-scale murals in real time. Festival attendees are invited to witness the creative process unfold, engaging directly with artists as they work.

Organized by the City of Salem's Public Art Commission in partnership with the Salem Arts Festival, the Mural Slam enhances the cultural vitality of our historic city while showcasing extraordinary artistic talent.

The Experience

• Live Creation: Watch as blank 8' × 4' canvases transform into vibrant works of art over the course of the festival weekend

• Artist Interaction: Engage with creators as they work, gaining insight into their techniques and artistic vision

• Lasting Impact: Completed murals remain on public display throughout Salem for up to a year before being returned to the artists

Audience Voting Process

Be part of selecting this year's Mural Slam People's Choice winner! As our artists create their masterpieces throughout the festival weekend, visitors are invited to participate in our community voting process:

• Digital Voting: Cast your vote through our mobile-friendly digital voting platform by scanning the QR code displayed at the Mural Slam location

• Voting Period: Polls open Friday, June 6th at noon and remain open for one week after the festival concludes (closing date TBA)

• People's Choice Award: Your votes determine which artist receives the coveted People's Choice recognition

The winning mural will be featured prominently in downtown Salem for the coming year, and the artist will be announced on our social media channels following the close of voting.
