Together: Salem Arts Festival Community Art Project
May 29, 2021 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Introducing TOGETHER — the 2021 Salem Arts Festival Community Art Project led by local artist and owner of Grace & Diggs, Linda Mullen. We are calling on the community to join us in constructing large flowers out of marine-grade shrink wrap. Through guided workshops and DIY videos, these simple-to-make flowers offer an opportunity for self-expression and reflection on the last year — what we have lost, what we are grateful for, and what we have learned. Everyone’s unique flowers will be collected and used to create a large installation piece during the Salem Arts Festival. The installation will be a celebration of what it means to be together once again.
WAYS TO PARTICIPATE
This is a great activity for both individuals and families, young and old, for those comfortable with craft-making and for those who don’t do much of it. Depending on your comfort level with being out in public, you can participate in one of the following ways:
1. Join us for any of our socially-distanced and walk-in workshops on Artists’ Row the weekends of May 22 and May 29. Constructing one flower can take as little as 20 minutes. Just bring yourself — all materials will be provided!
PLEASE NOTE: The bathrooms on Artists’ Row have not yet been opened for the season. Additionally, marine-grade shrink wrap can be dusty. We recommend wearing old clothes and bringing a pair of work gloves, if you have them.
2. If you prefer to make your flowers at home, you can pick up a pre-made kit at any of our workshops and drop off of your finished flowers at the festival. Follow along to our at-home DIY video here (coming soon!).
TOGETHER will be installed during the festival, June 4-6, and attendees will be able to continue adding to the installation. We invite you to participate and hope that this process will be a ritual for reflection, release, and reunion.
