2018
One goal of the Salem Arts Festival is to invite as many people as possible to participate actively in the arts. For the fifth year, we are including a community-built public art installation as part of the festival.
Bee to Brick, this year's community art project, embraces the Salem Main Streets theme of "Live, Work, Play" by celebrating some of the hardest "working" bugs out there - pollinators!
Bee to Brick will install playful swarms of several hundred "bees" around the festival area, created entirely out of recycled plastic bottles and other reusable plastic pollution. New England pollinators are endangered by pollution and habitat depletion. Bee to Brick uses community art-making workshops and a community art installation above Front Street and Artists' Row to increase awareness of the critical role pollinators play in sustaining our ecosystem.
After the project, the bees will be transformed to “bricks” for the use of Phoenix School students for their “Bottle Brick Project.” Bee to Brick shows that we can think of the full life-cycle of our actions - from the waste we create to a temporary art project to a more permanent solution.
We are currently looking for community groups who want to participate in a workshop, and/or individuals who can come to one of our Monday night workshops! All ages and abilities are enthusiastically encouraged to contribute, no skill set required. Contact Kylie Sullivan at kylie@salemmainstreets.org or Kate Babcock at k8.babcock@gmail.com to get involved.
