It’s hard to believe that the 2012 Salem Arts Festival is barely more than a month away! Things are really starting to gear up here at festival headquarters. This week our jury was hard at work evaluating the amazing applications we received for gallery artists, performers, and street festival vendors. Watch this space for 2012 artist announcements VERY SOON.

We’re also beginning to recruit volunteers for the weekend of the festival, June 1 – June 3. The Salem Arts Festival is an entirely volunteer-run event and we need your help to showcase our artists and introduce visitors to our community. Volunteer activities in the past have included helping with set-up,overseeing the gallery, greeting musicians, guiding visitors, and more. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Salem Main Streets Manager Jennifer Bell at jennifer@salemmainstreets.org or (978)744-0004 x15.

Salem Arts Festival is this weekend
By Amanda McGregor
STAFF WRITER

SALEM — Art can be appreciated in many forms, whether it’s a live tattoo demonstration, free hoop-dance lessons, or a juried show of paintings, photographs and sculpture.

The third annual Salem Arts Festival promises all those things — and more — with a lineup of live performances, art-making activities, film and exhibits — all for free — tomorrow through Sunday.

This year’s festival offers an outdoor stage on the Essex Street pedestrian mall with free entertainment Saturday and Sunday and a juried exhibit of work by 30 artists on display in the Museum Place Mall.

“In most area art shows, it’s about artists and vendors selling their artwork, but we don’t follow that model,” said Jennifer Bell, manager of Salem Main Streets, which started the volunteer-run festival.

“We really just want to have free performances and opportunities for people to experience all types of art … [READ MORE]

Dear Salem Arts Festival guests:

On behalf of the City of Salem, welcome to the Salem Arts Festival! This year’s festival includes a variety of artists and activities. So whether you’d like to take in an outdoor performance on the Essex Street Mall or find something fun to do with the kids, the Salem Arts Festival has something for you.

The Salem Arts Festival gives us a chance to show off our history and diversity through our vibrant arts community and our bustling downtown. And we’re proud of both. While enjoying the many talents of Salem residents, I hope you also take some time to enjoy the diverse and eclectic offerings of Salem’s downtown businesses and our expanding waterfront.

Special thanks goes out to the Salem Arts Association, Salem Main Streets, Salem Sounds and all the other groups and individuals who worked hard to organize this year’s festival.

Over the weekend, I encourage you to take in as much art and as many performances as possible. Events like the Salem Arts Festival are what make Salem a great city to live in and visit and I hope you enjoy your time downtown.

Very truly yours,
